About Concert

The Los Angeles Korean-American Musician’s Association (LAKMA) is putting on a benefit concert for the Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation. The Han-Schneider International Children’s foundation supports orphaned children in North Korea as well as refugee children around the world. LAKMA and the Los Angeles Korean Philharmonic Orchestra (LAKPO) are coming together to celebrate the 200th birthday of Italian opera master, Guiseppe Verdi, with a performance of ‘Requiem’. Because July 27th, 2013 will be the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, “Requiem” will be performed not only to commemorate Verdi, but also as tribute to the victims of the Korean War.

LAKMA( Los Angeles Korean-American Musicians’ Association)는 음악을 통해 비영리 단체들을 돕는 사역을 하고 있습니다. 지난 2012년에는 한인가정상담소와 MPAK이라는 입양 단체를 Los Angeles Korean Philharmonic과 함께 도움으로 미주 한인 사회에 귀감이 되는 단체로 인정받고 있습니다. 이번에는 the Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall에서 7월 12일 금요일 저녁에 ”평화 음악회 / Peace Concert“라는 이름 아래 몇 가지 중요한 의미를 갖고 연주회를 합니다.

첫 째, 현재 불우한 전세계 어린이 들과 특히 북한의 고아들을 돕고 있는 Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation이라는 단체를 위한 Fundraising Benefit Concert로 마련된 자선 음악회 성격을 갖고 있습니다.

두 번째, 한국전에서 희생당한 전사자들을 추모하는 성격을 갖고 있습니다. 올 해 7월 27일이 마침 한국전 휴전 60주년으로 그 의미를 더하고 그리고 베르디 탄생 200주년으로 기념하여 그의 레퀴엠을 프로그램 화 하게 된 것입니다. 요즘 국제적으로 평화의 소중함이 더 절실히 강조되는 이 시기에 이 “평화 음악회“를 통해 평화의 중요성을 함께 나누고 또 한국전의 희생자들을 추모하며 전세계의 불우한 어린이들과 북한의 고아 어린이들을 도울 수 있는 기회가 될 것입니다.

이번 음악회는 LAKMA, Los Angeles Korean Philharmonic의 상임 지휘자이신 윤임상 교수님의 지휘 아래 솔리스트로는 소프라노 김영미교수님, 한인으로 최초로 벨리니 콩쿨에서 1등 수상, 그리고 외에 델모나코등 주요 성악콩쿨에서 1등을 수상한 이아경 교수님, 줄리어드를 졸업하고 현재 주류 오페라 무대에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 베이스 김영복님, 엘에이와 센프란시스코 오페라에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 테너 Robert MacNeil님 께서 함께 연주 하게 됩니다. 이번 LAKMA합창단은 미국, 필리핀, 중국, 타이완, 일본등 타 커뮤니티들 멤버들과 함께 하여 더욱 뜻 깊은 연주회가 될 것입니다.

About the Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation

The Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation was founded in 2007 by former orphan, “Sam” Sang Man Han. Sang Man Han was orphaned during the outbreak of the Korean War and lived on the streets for several years before meeting an American Professor Dr. Arthur Schneider in Seoul. Dr. Schneider loved Sang Man Han and eventually adopted him and brought to the United States. The mission Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation is to provide life-saving essentials to the world’s most destitute children.

North Korea has been devastated with flooding and drought last year and it has destroyed over 35% of their crop production. Food shortage is widespread and the children are starving and dying every day from mal-nutrition. The children need our help and they need it now. The Han-Schneider International Children’s Foundation supports three state-run orphanages in North Korea, Oncheon, P’yongsung and Hwang-Ju with a total of 2,200 orphans, age ranging from infancy to 15 years old.. HSICF’s goal is to offer hope and love to all the defenseless children around the world by providing clothing, medical supplies and food to all children under its care.

About Verdi’s Requiem

A 19th century Italian composer, and one of the greatest Romantic composers, Verdi’s name is synonymous with the Italian opera. Verdi wrote “Requiem” to commemorate the deaths of two Italian cultural greats, composer Giocchino Rossini and novelist Alessandro Manzoni. The piece is a thrilling work of high drama and deep solemnity.

Im Sang Yoon, Conductor | 음악감독 윤임상

Im Sang Yoon is the director of the Music Department and a Professor of Choral Conducting at the World Mission University (WMU). He is well known for his passionate interpretations, and outstanding performances of major choral works with orchestra. He is also a clinician and lecturer, who has conducted master classes and seminars in America and in South Korea. He lectured at the Epochal Choral Seminar, the largest choral seminar in Korea, and was also a lecturer and a clinician at the Jubilate Press seminar.

He has been involved in numerous benefit concerts involving the Korean-American communities. Some of his benefit concerts were: Food for Needy, 2009-2010, Oratorio Messiah by Handel, Elijah by Mendelssohn, WMU Scholarship Concert 2009, benefit concert for MPAP 2012 – Walt Disney Hall, Symphony #9 by Beethoven, Benefit concert for Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) 2012, Na Num Mission –Youth drug prevention center, A Mid – Night Summer Dream by Mendelssohn, Korean War Veteran Memorial Concert, 2008 – Requiem by Verdi, and Korean Festival Day, 2007 – Gun, Gom, Gam, Ri by Hyo Won Woo.

He holds a bachelor of Music in Voice form Chung Ang University in Seoul. Since moving to the United States, he continued his studies in Choral and Instrumental Conducting at University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, where he studied under William Dehning and Hans Beer, and completed the Master of Music program in Choral Conducting. He subsequently received the Doctor of Musical Arts in Instrumental Conducting at American Conservatory of Music (ACM) in Chicago, where he studied with Dr. Richard Schultz, a former chair of the Telemann society.

He established the School of Music at the Shepherd University and served as a professor there, and then moved to the World Mission University and founded its music department. Currently, he serves as the Music Director and Conductor of the Los Angeles Korean Philharmonic Orchestra (LAKPO), the Los Angeles Korean-American Musicians Association (LAKMA).

윤임상은 World Mission University의 음악학과장으로 있으며 본 대학의 지휘과 교수로 재직하고 있고, The Korean Philharmonic Orchestra, LAKMA 의 음악감독으로 활동하고 있다. 그는 오케스트라와 함께하는 메이저 합창음악을 뛰어난 곡 해석과 함께 열정적이고 생동감있게 연주하는 지휘자로 정평이 나 있다.

그의 연주는 항상 전문적인 연주와 함께 자선음악회 성격을 띠며 계속해서 미주 사회의 자선 단체를 돕는 일에 힘쓰고 있다. 그 동안 미주 성시화운동본부의 연말 사랑의 쌀 모금운동 음악회를 2회(2009, 2010) 청소년 마약 퇴치운동을 펼치고 있는 나눔 선교회를 돕는 음악회(2011), 한국 가정상담소를 돕는 음악회(2012), 월드미션 대학교 장학기금마련을 위한 음악회(2009)와 MPACK (한인 입양 단체) 을 돕는 음악회(2012)를 월트 디즈니 홀에서, 펼쳤고 올해는 2008년에 이어 2번째로 평화음악회로 베르디의 레퀴엠을 연주하게 된다.

그는 한국에서 중앙대학교 성악과를 졸업하고, 윤학원 교수의 영향으로 합창 지휘를 공부하러 미국에 유학, University of Southern California (USC)에서 MM (Choral Conducting), Chicago American Conservatory of Music 에서 DMA(Conducting) 를 마쳤다. 한편 Haggard Theological Seminary of Azusa Pacific University 에서 신학 석사(MDiv.) 를 공부, 신학적 바탕에 음악을 접목시키려 준비하였다. 그 동안 Dr. William Dehnning (USC), Hans Beer (USC), Richard Schultz (AMC, 전 Telemann Society 회장) 등 유수한 지휘자들을 사사했다.

Soloists

Yeongmi Kim, Soprano | 소프라노 김영미

Yeongmi Kim is a world renowned soprano and recipient of numerous awards including the 1979 Puccini International Vocal Competition. Kim was a top six competitor in the 1981 Luciano Pavarotti International Vocal Competition. The honor allowed her to perform in the opera “L’elisir d’amore” alongside Lucianao Pavarotti—a performance that brought her recognition as one of the world’s best sopranos. A graduate of the Santa Cecilia National Conservatory of Music, Kim is currently a professor at the Korea National University of Art. In 1981 she was selected as one of the best six at the Luciano Pavarotti International vocal competition in Philadelphia. It gave her a chance to perform with Luciano Pavarotti in the opera ” L’elisir d’amore”, which made brought her recognition as one of the world’s best sopranos.

이탈리아 로마 싼타 체칠리아 국립음악학교에서 학위를 받고 이어 싼타 체칠리아 음악대학원에서 석사 학위를 받았으며 현재는 한국예술종합학교 성악과 교수로 재직 중인 소프라노 김영미는 “섬세한 테크닉과 화려한 목소리”라는 평을 받으며 1977년 이탈리아 베로나 국제성악콩쿨 1위, 1979년 이탈리아 푸치니 국제 성악콩쿨 1위, 이듬해 1980년에는 이탈리아 밀라노에서 열린 마리아 칼라스 국제 성악콩쿨에서 “6명의 최고”란 상을 받았으며 1981년 미국 필라델피아에서 열린 루치아노 파바로티 국제 성악콩쿨에 도전, 오페라 “사랑의 묘약”의 여주인공인 “아디나”로 발탁되어 파바로티 상대역으로 공연을 하게 됨으로써 세계무대의 한국 성악의 새 지평을 연 소프라노로 인정받았다.국내에서도 난파음악상, 보관문화훈장을 수여 받았으며 그의 쉼 없는 왕성한 연주 활동 경력과 뛰어난 기량 못지않은 연기력으로 그는 수많은 오페라 대작들에서 주역을 맡고 있다. 그동안 출연한 주요 작품으로는 국립오페라 “람메르무어의 루치아”의 루치아, 김자경 오페라단 “라트라비아타”의 비올렛타, 서울 시립오페라 “아드리아나 루크르베르”, 로얄 오페라 “라트라비아타”의 비올레타, “라보엠”의 미미, KBS 심포니 정기연주 오페라 “오델로”, 일본 후지와라 오페라단 “라트라비아타”의 비올렛타, 한국오페라단 “황진이”의 황진이, 로마 싼타체칠리아 오케스트라 오페라 웨버의 “마탄의 사수”의 엔혠, 휴스톤 그랜드 오페라단 “나비부인”의 초초상, “라보엠”의 미미, “투란도트”의 리우, 오마하 오페라단 “카르멘”의 미카엘라, 올란도 오페라 “나비부인”초초상, “사랑의 묘약” 아디나, 뉴욕씨티 오페라단 “라보엠”의 미미로 출연하였으며 특히 뉴욕씨티 오페라 “나비부인” 초초상 역으로 공연할 당시에는 공연도중 관객들의 열렬한 기립박수로 공연이 잠시 중단된 일화까지 있다. 2009년에는 국립오페라 “노르마”의 노르마역으로 열연, 2012년에는 “라보엠”의 미미역으로 지휘자 정명훈과 함께 국립오페라 창단 50주년을 기념하는 오페라 관객들과 조우하였다. 수많은 오페라뿐만 아니라 세계 각지의 여러공연을 통해서 감미로우면서 파워풀한 목소리로 감동의 무대를 선사 해오고 있다.

A Kyeong Lee, Mezzo Soprano |메조 소프라노 이아경

Internationally renowned Mezzo soprano, A Kyeong Lee, is well accustomed to recognition. The first-place competitor in the 34th Vincenzo Bellini, 19th Viotti-Valsesia, 6th Alcamo, and 4th Spiros Argiris International Concourses, Lee’s achievements are various and top-tier. After her 1995 debut with the National Opera of Korea, Lee continued with the Opera as prima donna in performances like Aida, Don Carlo, and Il Trovatore among countless others. Lee’s alacrity for music is found not only in her awards and prestigious roles, but her participation concerts such as the Festival of World Peace Concert and Korea National Assembly Concert. Lee graduated Cum Laude from Kyung Hee University’s College of Music and its Graduate School of Music as well as earning certificates from the Orfeo Academia in Parm, Italy; Viotti Academia in Vercelli, Italy; Pier Miranda Ferraro Course in Lanciano, Italy and Rita Orlanid Malaspina Course in Val Sesia, Italy. Lee is currently a professor at Kyung Hee University.

Robert MacNeil, Tenor | 테너 로버트 맥네일

Praised by the Los Angeles Times for possessing a voice that is “clarion” and “clear”, tenor Robert MacNeil debuted at the San Francisco Opera debut as the High Priest of Neptune in Mozart’s Idomeneo, and returned to perform in productions of Salome, Le Nozze di Figaro and in Werther—all of which received critical praise. Mr. MacNeil is an accomplished concert artist and has been a soloist in more than sixty performances of Handel’s Messiah, his extensive experience includes performances with groups like the Central Union Philharmonic in Beijing, the Orchestra Roma Symphonia in Rome, and has taken him to world renowned venues like Carnegie Hall. Mr. Macneil received his B.M. from Chapman University and M.M. from the University of Southern California. At the University of Southern California, he was a Marilyn Horne Scholar and was named Most Outstanding Graduate Student from the Thornton School of Music. Mr. MacNeil is currently on the voice faculty of World Mission University in Los Angeles and was previously on the faculties of Citrus College and Irvine Valley College.

테너 성악가 Robert Macneil은 “청명”하고 “맑은” 음색으로 LA Times의 극찬을 받은 바 있다. 그는 샌프란시스코 오페라 단에서 모짜르트의 Idomemeo 중 주교의 역할로 공식 데뷰하였고 그후 살로메, 피가로의 결혼, Werther등의 주옥같은 오페라에 출연 Opera News애 “화려하며 당당한 노래”를 부르는 가수로 평가받았다. 그는 최근 LA Opera와 Wagner의 Lohengrin을 공연하였으며 그전에도 낙인찍힌 자들, 피델리오, 일트로바토레, 로젠카발리에, 탄호이져, The play fo Daniel, 라 보엠, 일타바로 등을 공연하였다. 유명한 Ojai Festival에서 Kent Nagano의 지휘아래 Orff의 오페라 the Kluge에 출연하였고, Copland의 the Tender Land 공연 실황 리코딩은 세계적으로 유명해지기까지 하였다.
그는 콘서트에서도 그 실력을 인정받아 헨델의 메시아 솔로를 무려 60번 이상 연주하였다. 그 외에도 엘리아 공연, 호주 시드니 합창단과 Berlioz의 레퀴엠, 또한 북경에서 중앙당 필하모닉과 Orff의 Carmina Burana 등의 연주 경력이 있다. 그는 Britten의 The World of the Spirit 솔로 연주로 카네기 홀에 데뷰하였고, 그 후 로마에서 로마신포니아 오케스트라와 베르디의 레퀴엠을 연주한 바 있다.
또한 객원 테너가수로 Oregon Symphony, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pacific Symphony, Oregon Festival of American Music, Pacific Chorale, Long Beach Opera, Pasadena Symphony, California Philharmonic, Angeles Chorale, Opera Santa Barbara, New West Symphony, Santa Barbara Symphony, Bozeman Symphony and numerous concerts with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, William Hall Master Chorale, Bakersfield Symphony, California Master Chorale 그리고 the Cascade Music Festival 등과 함께 연주하였다.
Met 콩쿨의 National finalist였던 Robert Macneil은 Champman College에서 학사를 USC에서 석사 학위를 받았는데, 그는 석사 취득 시 Marilyln Horne 장학생이었뿐 아니라 가장 뛰어난 졸업생으로 인정받았다. 그는 현재 월드미션대학 성악교수이며, Citrus College와 Irvine Valley College에서도 교수로 일한 바 있다.

Young Bok Kim, Bass | 베이스 김영복

The commanding Bass, Young-Bok Kim, has dazzled audiences and critics as the title roles in the Sarasota Opera’s productions of Attila, Colline in La Boheme, Massimiliano in I Masnadieri, Nilakantha in Lakme, Basilio in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Sarastro in Die Zauberflote. Recently awarded the prestigious Emmy Award by New York City Opera for his role in Madama Butterfly, Kim’s repertoire includes, title roles in Attila, Ramfis in Aïda, Massimilliano in I Masnadieri, Ferrando in Il Trovatore, Phillip II in Don Carlos, Lodovico/Montano in Otello, Fiesco in Simon Boccanegra, Frere Laurent in Romeo et Juliette, Padre Guardiano in La forza del Destino. A native of Seoul, Korea, Kim first obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in music from Chung-Ang University in Korea, completed a second masters and professional studies certificate from the Mannes College of Music, where he received the Marion Marcus Wahl Award for Excellence in Performance. After Mannes, Kim went on to further his studies at the prestigious Juilliard Opera Center.
Today, he actively shares his gift around the world and his upcoming performances include Ferrando in Il Trovatore with Opera New Jersey and Sparafucile in Rigoletto and Timur in Turandot witn Sarasota Opera.

중앙대학교와 동 대학원 졸업 후 메네스 음악대학에서 석사과정과 전문 연주자과정을 장학생으로 졸업한 후 세계적인 명성의 줄리아드 음악학교의 최고 연주자과정인 줄리아드 오페라 센터에서 전액 장학생으로 졸업했다. 줄리아드 재학시절 루치아노 파바로티와의 마스터 클라스에서 탄탄히 준비된 젊은 베이스라는 극찬을 받았으며, 뉴욕 타임즈, 월 스트릿저널, 오페라뉴스 등 세계적 유수의 매스컴으로부터 “격조 높고 당당한 사운드”, “그에게는 관객을 끌어 당기는 묘한 매력이 있다” 등의 찬사를 받기도 했다. 최근 미국 전역으로 생중계 되었던 뉴욕 시티 오페라단과의 나비부인 공연으로 미국 방송계 최고의 행사이며 미국 텔레비전 아카데미가 수여하는 영예의 에미상을 수상하였다. 베르디 레퀴엠, 모차르트 레퀴엠 등을 카네기홀, 천사의 모후 성당, 에브리피셔 홀과 앨리스툴리 홀 등에서 연주하는 등 콘서트 가수로서도 활동하고 있으며, 현재 뉴욕 시티 오페라단을 기반으로 미국과 캐나다를 비롯한 북미 전역에서 왕성한 활동을 하고 있다.
